Morrisons trolley dash
Morrisons sherry selection only made it onto my radar recently, when they started stocking one of our favourite everyday Finos – La Ina. Since then I’ve become a more frequent visitor!
Top of the charts for me is Lustau’s La Ina – until Morrisons started stocking it, I could only get it in independent wine shops, despite it being as prevalent as Tio Pepe in Jerez. It’s a lovely lovely Fino, and if you’ve never tried it just get yourself to Morrisons immediately – that’s an order. Usually retailing at £9.99, Morrisons discount it several times a year to £7.99. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll get the heads up when it happens!
Still on the Fino theme, you can also find Tio Pepe and Elegante from Gonzalez Byass. Elegante is another excellent Fino and worth a try if you’ve never had it.
Alongside the usual commercial sweeties (Croft Original and Particular, Harveys Bristol Cream, Medium Amontillado Blend and Pale Cream), you can also find Harveys VORS Pedro Ximenez on Morrisons’ shelves. Although it was confusingly placed amongst the port, rather than with the other sherry!
Premium range own-label gems
Morrisons’ own-label range is called M Signature and is sourced from Lustau. It comes in 37.5cl bottles and priced at £5.99. The range includes a Manzanilla, Palo Cortado, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez. All are good, but the Manzanilla is exceptional – as well as the expected aromas and flavours of salted almonds and green olives, there’s a lovely spiciness with notes of cumin and coriander.
Morrisons is all about Finos and Finas for me. I just can’t go past a bottle of La Ina, so being able to pick it up with the weekly shop (and often at a bargain price) is a little touch of luxury. From the own-label range, the Manzanilla is the one for me. Spiciness and complexity that belies the price.
